My First Extension: StayFocusd

I’ve used Chrome for a while but never really bothered with the extension scene. This was the same back in the day when I used Firefox. However I tried my first extension today in an attempt to increase my productivity.

I didn’t set out to do that but I was browsing the Chrome extensions rated highest and stumbled across StayFocusd.

StayFocusd

The premise of this extension is blocking access to a website after an allotted amount of time. The precise configuration of length of time and days active can be configured in the settings.

What I’ve set up is a system where I block the sites that I waste the most time on during the useful work week, which I defined personally to be Sunday through Thursday, inclusive. I left Friday and Saturday open because I’d like to relax before I get back to work on Sunday.

I’ll see how this extension works and report on it at the end of this week. Hopefully one of the benefits you’ll see is more posts on my blog.

    • If you get around to trying it let me know what you think! I can use it (if you don’t mind) when I officially review the extension (probably this Friday).

  2. The stayfocusd extension seems to be working out well for you. I see quite a few new posts on your blog!

Hacker News has a feature similar to what stayfocusd offers. You probably are more aware of that than I am though. (I don’t do well on Hacker News…) It sounds like a good idea, and an effective productivity aid. I noticed that you reviewed stayfocusd as promised when I “landed”. I’ll have a look at that next.

Wanted to tell you that I finally got around to including you on my blogroll. Thank you so much for listing me, I didn’t realize for a long time that I was here!

I went sort of hog wild with extensions initially. Effectively, it was like converting Chrome browser into something as heavy (or worse!) than IE 7. Even now I notice that I’ve got at least 8 extensions up top, half of which I probably don’t need. They really chew up resources, so I commend you for your self-discipline in not indiscriminately installing them (like me)!
